WHO WE ARE
The Perinatal Society originated from a consortium of health-care professionals dealing with the different components in the field of perinatology; obstetrics, paediatirics and public health. It first convened in 2001 to specifically address concerns and focus interest in maternal and newborn care. It was officially chartered the same year and commenced holding of annual academic conferences since then.
The society became an active member in the national effort towards improving healthcare for mothers and infants and it has stayed committed to its mission and vision, throughout the many years since its inception. Today, it is led by a President and a Council of health care professionals who use their individual talents to help ensure that the proud legacy created so many years ago would continue.
ADVOCACY
As an organisation, dedicated to the promotion of health care and public policy, that ensures the optimal health and long-term development for mothers and infants. From its inception, it has partnered with many organisations, such as the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians, Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka, Family Health Bureau, Ministry of Health, UNICEF and WHO, who have a similar mission and focus.
The society uses a variety of mechanisms to carry out its advocacy agenda. Some of these are the hosting regional conferences for health care professionals on pertinent perinatal topics, presentations and educational lectures in various forums, working closely with legislature, participation in other boards or committees as well as partnering with other groups which share similar agenda.
